Defending Britain – Castles from the 11th to 14th Century
6 week course
What does a castle mean to you – a ruin, a heap of stones, a large house or a fortification? Did you know that England & Wales are home to a host of castles of unrivalled variety?
In our course we will look at the different types, how they changed, got better and better and then ceased to be built at all. We will explore how they functioned as a machine for fighting as well as living in.
After this course you will be well equipped to look at any castle you visit, in Essex or beyond, with new eyes and to put it into a historical framework.
Tutor – Roger Cooke
Fee: £26.50
Start date – Tuesday 13 April 2010, at 7.30pm in The Schoolroom, United Reformed Church, The Street, Little Waltham.
To book a place on this course, please phone Margaret Williams on 01245 360042 or Sue Williams on 01245 360213.
(In the event of a high demand for places, priority will be given to those who have pre-booked.)
Roger Cooke has studied and taught history for over 30 years. In the early eighties, together with a colleague, he produced an edited version of his grandfather’s diary of his experiences as a rifleman in the King’s Royal Rifles in the last year of the First World War. In 1984 Roger obtained his Masters degree for research into the management of parliamentary elections in mid eighteenth century England. For 13 years he enthralled generations of Kentish folk with the glories of the castles in the South East.
